Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipAfter months of debate and hundreds of public comments, the State Department of Environmental Protection says it has finalized the vehicle access maps for Warren State Forest and the DEP will begin strict enforcement of the map soon.
State leaders say there will be 261 total vehicle miles inside the forest.
57 of those miles are paved state and county roads alongside 28 miles for hunting access.
The remaining 175 miles will be used for maintenance access and forest law enforcement.
Fines for illegal offroading go up to a minimum of $1,000, and if you cause damage, you could pay up to five times the total cost of that damage.
The DEP says it received almost 1800 written comments during the public comment period from January to April from today through the end of the year.
State Park Police say they'll take an educational approach teaching illegal off roaders about the new maps and routes.
But beginning January 1st they will begin strict enforcement of those maps.
The DEP says these new maps and routes will help protect the health of the forest, as well as critical plants and wildlife in the area.
